You know what goes good in the dead of winter? Chili. Chili does. So far the winter has been kind to us but it’s Michigan so you never know. Either way we are excited to announce our 6th annual chili cook-off on January 18th!!! Mark your calendars!!
Rules:
Just like last year we are going to keep it simple. There will be just one category. “BEST OVERALL.” What does best overall mean? I don’t know you tell me. Just go with what you feel, maybe try and please the crowd, maybe spice it up. Or go with something unique. Beans, no beans, the choice yours. Get creative, try a chicken flavor or something else you’ve got up your sleeve.
FREE ENTRY. FREE TASTES FOR ALL THOSE VOTING.
On the day of, come between 2 and 3 pm to register yourself and your best chili.
Serving will start at 3 pm.. We will have a ballot box and the chilies will be judged blind by all participating and visiting the taproom that day. [ONE VOTE PER PERSON]
- The chili with the most votes will be awarded 1st place
- Second most votes = 2nd place
- Third most votes = 3rd place

We are having our annual St Practice Day Party because we all know practice makes perfect.
It means it’s time to go out for a lash! Time for your favorite beer drinking holiday and getting your Irish on!!! Come celebrate in style at Downey Brewing Company. We’ve got a few tricks up our sleeve this year.
Firstly, we are releasing our famous St. Patrick Snake Banisher Stout!! ANNND we are putting it on Nitro!! The beer is legendary just like the late great Saint himself.
Second, we have a very delicious Irish Red called Hooligan. I’d recommend one or two of those for sure. Nice, dark, malty richness.
Third, SHAMROCK will be back back!! This one is magic folks.
SHAMROCK: This beer is half English IPA, half American Pale Ale, and half Irish Red. We took the recipes of three different beers and mashed them all together. It is an interesting take on three different styles. So how did we fit three beers in one? Magic! ABV: 6.0% - IBU: 40 - SRM: 5 STYLE: English Pale Mild Ale

New For 2024 we are doing an Irish Stew Cook Off! we have had so much fun at the chili cook off that we are trying a spin on the idea but with Irish Stew. Bring a crockpot of your best effort to challenge the competition. Registration at 2 pm, serving starts at 3 pm.
Weekly bike rides with 2 groups. One is a slow roll and the other is 12 plus miles per hour. Loop rides that start and end at the brewery. Each week has a theme. Look for events for longer monthly week end rides also.
Our Holiday Bazaar is back with crafters and vendors selling great gifts. We will update the participants as it gets closer. Our Black Friday sale is back. Dean’ list memberships for sale at $45.

Oktoberfest in Munich starts in September and runs into October. We are not in Munich but we will have our own version. We will be joined by our friends DeutschTroit with some delicious German Food. We will release a fresh Oktoberfest beer. Mark your calendar.
Hawaii became a state on August 21, 1959. Since we love a party and have had annual Luau parties prior to COVID we thought this was the perfect day to bring back an annual event. Details to follow on food and fun will be coming soon. Mark your calendars.
F.O.R.D Home Brew Club vs Motor City Mashers vs Downriver Brewers Guild. Each club came up with a recipe and brewed at the brewery. We release all three beers and keep track of sales of pints and cans sold. Each sale is a point. Whoever has the most points in the winner. They will win the Brewer’s Cup and be the Give Back Tap. They will receive $1 from each pint of their beer sold at the taproom. The contest is Sudden Death and ends when the first tap at the brewery runs out.
Clean out those closets and garage, bring a table, and come up to Downey. $5 fee to sell, free to shop. We will have Amaizing Dawgs for food. Plenty of room with the big former press room. Please sign up at the taproom if attending. You can pau when you sign up. Dean’s List members can sell for free.

MR IPA CAN RELEASE
We’ve talked about it. We’ve been assembling the pieces. We have everything we need. And now, THIS IS HAPPENING!!!

Mark your Calendars for Friday, July 17th at 6 PM.
On 7/17/20 at 6pm we will be releasing our first ever batch of cans!! Of course, we chose our favorite, and our most popular beer for our first release, the famous MR IPA!
Let’s go over some details of how this is going to work:
We’re not entirely sure what the demand for cans will be so to kick things off we’ll be canning two kegs of MR IPA which is equal to 60 four-packs of 16 oz. cans. If we need to can more for the next release, we will, but for this release ONLY 60 four-packs of 16 oz. cans will be available. As fresh batches of MR IPA are brewed we will have future MR IPA can releases.
As stated above, the cans will be released Friday, July 17th at 6 PM. However, since there is a limited quantity, we will be offering two ways to purchase a pack of cans before the official release.
If you are a Dean’s List member you can pre-purchase ONE pack of cans the week leading up to the release by purchasing a ticket at the brewery. The ticket will then be exchanged for a four-pack of cans on 7/17. These tickets will be available 7/10 – 7/16. If you are not a Dean’s List member you can still pre-purchase ONE pack of cans from 4 PM – 6 PM on Friday, July 17th. Then, at 6 PM all remaining cans will be available for sale with no limit on the quantity for purchase.

Dean’s List Pre-Sale: 7/10-7/16, ONE pack of four 16 oz. can be purchased.
Regular Pre-Sale: 7/17 4 PM – 6 PM, ONE pack of four 16 oz. cans can be purchased.

That’s right on November 5th, 2019 we will officially have made three laps around the sun as Downey Brewing Company!! Can you believe that? November 5th, happens to be a Tuesday this year so we’re celebrating early on Saturday, November 2nd!!
This is what we’ve got up our sleeves this year…
- The 1st 125 guests will be going home with a super awesome commemorative 3rd Anniversary Downey Brewing Company Pint Glass.
- We are releasing our 2019 Batch One Stout
- We have a very limited amount of our corn whiskey aged 2016 Batch One Stout left. There are two versions. Both were brewed in 2016 then aged in a corn whiskey barrel from Two James. One was aged two years in the corn whiskey barrel and the other was kegged in 2017 and stored in the walk-in cooler. Put bluntly your choices are a very boozy Batch One, or an extremely boozy Batch One. The choice is yours! EITHER WAY, THIS IS THE LAST BIT OF OUR FIRST BATCH EVER!! Get it before it disappears off the planet forever.
- The Hard Cider returns for its official re-release!!
- The Curse of the Black Porter makes its return to the taps!!

This year, Downey Brewing Company, has decided to dedicate our first ever “Give Back Tap” for October, to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We believe that even one person can make a difference, and that everyone should try. A portion of the proceeds earned during the entire month of October from our “Give Back Tap” will go towards the fight against breast cancer. In addition, this is our first fundraising event for Breast Cancer and we are partnering with #KellmannStrong to bring you HELP FOR A CURE on Thursday, October 24th! A portion of proceeds earned from the event will also be donated to the #KellmannStrong 2020 Detroit Race for the Cure team.
75% of fundraising earned will stay within Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties to help women who would not otherwise have access to screening and treatment; 25% will go towards grants through Susan G Komen. This is super important, as our tri-county area has higher rates of both late stage diagnosis and death than any other area in Michigan, and the nation. The research dollars around genetics and biology have led to personalized, less-invasive breast cancer treatments as opposed to the “one-treatment-fits-all” approach, and has proven to be much more effective. We really can make a difference and we’d love you to join us!
Here’s our plan to join in on the fight against breast cancer:
1) $1.00 from each brew sold on our dedicated “Give Back Tap”, will be donated towards Breast Cancer for the ENTIRE month of October!
2) Our Fundraising event, HELP FOR A CURE, will take place on Thursday, October 24th from 5 PM – 8 PM. Entry is $10.00 and includes food and four raffle tickets.
3) Additional raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the event. We are partnering with local businesses, and organizations, to set-up a fundraising raffle. All raffle ticket proceeds will be donated to the cause!
4) Last but not least, a portion of the proceeds earned during our Help For A Cure event will be donated as well!

Five years ago we gathered in what was then the shipping room of KDG Finishers Corp. Back then we had little more than a dream and some tasty beer receipts. We brewed up 18 different batches of the good stuff and invited everyone we knew to a tasting event were launched our Kickstarter Campaign. The campaign went on to raise an outstanding $25,000 in 30 days which was enough to buy our first pieces of equipment and get Downey Brewing Company up and running!!
As a big thank you to our backers and our continued support we are hosting a five-year anniversary of the Kickstarter Party and Tasting Event. It will be a night to look back over the progress we’ve made in the last five years and a way for us to pay it forward for helping us get where we are now.
If you backed us during our Kickstarter Campaign, we would like to give you an enormous thank you and pay some of it back by offering you your first beer for $1.
Everyone else that supports us to this day will also be thanked in a way via FREE SWAG!!
